One section of the 2012-13 FLC Class

The First Year Leadership Class (FLC)

What is FLC?

The First Year Leadership Class (FLC) challenges students to learn about themselves through an experience at Texas A&M University-Commerce that cannot be duplicated anywhere else. While leadership is often defined by the offices one holds and the recognition one attains, there are other aspects to its meaning. FLC believes a leader is someone who has the initiative to improve his or her environment and act as a positive change agent for the campus and beyond.

This program is a partnership between the Department of Residential Living and Learning, University College, and the Department of Leadership Engagement & Development.

Who's in FLC?

Each year, FLC brings together 26 incoming students who desire to be active and engaged in their communities and academics. This diverse group of students forms a close-knit community with some of the most involved students on campus. The program strives to equip these students with the personal leadership skills and education necessary to lead throughout their college experience and beyond.

What are the foundations of the FLC program?

FLC is grounded in bringing a diverse group of students together to form a close-knit community with some of the most involved students on campus. The program strives to equip these students with the personal leadership skills and education necessary to lead throughout their college experience and beyond. This is done by taking an innovative approach towards leadership by combining fun, hands-on activities with eye-opening discussions.

What are the benefits of participating in FLC?

What are some activities that happen outside the classroom?

Students also have the opportunity to expand their learning by participating in a number of campus events and activities, such as the Outdoor Adventure challenge course, an etiquette dinner, StrengthsQuest, mock interviews, movie nights, One Word Showcase, and dinner with President Jones, among others. To see what FLC has been up to, head to our Facebook Page and click on some of the albums that apply (A Closer Look at #FLC2019, #FLC2019 Etiquette Dinner, etc.).
