About Us

HOW WE CAME TO BE

In the spring 2013, several student leaders approached the administration about a need or lack of service for the underrepresented student populations. In accordance with our mission of being truly student centered, a Diversity Initiative Task Force was formed which was comprised of students and staff. Based on the information that the Diversity Initiative Task Force obtained after benchmarking several institutions of higher education, reviewing existing multicultural programs and services, and conducting focus groups with student leaders, the committee recommended that an inclusion department/center be created at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The Serving Engaged Empowered & Diverse Students (S.E.E.D.S.) Office is a product of the task force recommendation and opened its doors fall 2015. The Office's mission and vision is in alignment with Texas A&M University-Commerce's strategic plan (Diversity-Goal I), "foster a culture of inclusion whereby people of all backgrounds who live, learn, and work at Texas A&M University-Commerce feel welcomed and valued."

MISSION

The Serving Engaged Empowered & Diverse Students (S.E.E.D.S.) office works to develop a spirit of inclusion and appreciation for diversity in a multifaceted campus community. We will work collaboratively with various campus and community partners to provide support, resources, educational opportunities, and events that build inclusion focusing on six areas of diversity: race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, interfaith, socioeconomic status, and disability. Through our services and initiatives, we hope to empower the students of Texas A&M University – Commerce to “Embrace Equality and Celebrate Differences” campus-wide.
