Jerry D. Morris Recreation Center

The recreation center is named in honor of Dr. Jerry D. Morris, the ninth President of East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce), 1987-1997. Dr. Morris served the University effectively for over 27 years. His commitment to developing the talent of faculty, staff and students, and his dedication to the importance of community relations is an enduring tribute to all who enter these doors. Dr. Morris’s portrait hangs in the lobby of the MRC.

The $12 million Morris Recreation Center, which opened June 2003 includes:

  • 45-foot climbing wall
  • Three-lane jogging track
  • Four racquetball courts
  • Two basketball courts
  • Three-tier cardiovacular, free weight, and cable cross equipment area
  • One large fitness/activity room
  • Classroom
  • Lobby area with vending machines, two restrooms, tables, and couches
  • Full men's and women's locker rooms
  • An outdoor area includes:
    • Heated leisure pool (beach-type entry, fountains, water tunnel, current channel, bubble jet benches, 3-lap lanes)
    • Two-tier hot tub with water fall
    • Two sand volleyball courts
    • Two basketball courts
    • Picnic tables and sunbathing area
