A&M-Commerce students receive Mayborn award

Two Paris, Texas-area staff members of The East Texan, the student newspaper at Texas A&M University-Commerce, have been chosen as recipients of Frank W. Mayborn awards for the upcoming academic year.

The scholarships were made possible through the generosity of Mr. Patrick Canty, publisher of The Odessa American since 2003.

Mr. Canty was named 2011 recipient of the Mayborn Award for Community Leadership by The Texas Daily Newspaper Association. He designated the funding from the award for scholarships in the Journalism Division of A&M-Commerce to recognize majors within the news-editorial program. Mr. Canty is 1982 graduate of East Texas State University with highest honors with majors in journalism and photography.

Savannah Christian is a senior journalism and English major from Pattonville, Texas and an Honors College student. She was campus life editor for The East Texan and is currently an intern at Living Magazine in Rockwall. She is vice President of The Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, and a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Chi Omega.

Jessica Martin is a journalism major with a minor in photography.  She was graphics editor for The East Texan and was active at North Lamar High School where she was an assistant editor for the yearbook and a member of the band. At A&M-Commerce she is enrolled in the Honors College and is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honors fraternities.

Christian and Martin will return this fall to editorial positions for the print and online editions of The East Texan, a weekly publication advised by Mr. Fred Stewart.
