By Sydni Walker

COMMERCE, TX—The University Playhouse will present The Game of Love and Chance at 8:00 p.m. November 15-19, and 3:00 p.m. November 20 in the Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The Game of Love and Chance is a comedy of manners set in the late 1940s in a Manhattan hotel.  Written by the 18th century French playwright, Pierre Carlet de Marivaux, and translated in 1992 by British playwright, Neil Bartlett, the play’s comic mayhem, desire and lovers intrigue involving disguises, mistaken identities and wild chase scenes are sure to keep the audience on edge.

Valerie Hauss-Smith, the play’s director, is a French native with a degree in history from the University of Strasbourg in Alsace, France, and professional training from the prestigious Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA. After moving to Texas, she worked with Shakespeare Dallas. Since 2001, she has directed, taught and staged eight of the Bard’s plays.

“I was so fortunate. I got my dream cast. Every actor is a perfect fit for their role,” Hauss-Smith said. “Every designer, technician and actor is a student, but I have truly been impressed by the level of professionalism shown by each individual. I am part of a wonderful ensemble.”

Cast members include Brittney Steddum, of Athens, TX; Sara Scholl, of Houston, TX; Samantha Grace, of Shreveport, LA; and Aimee Whitman, of Paris, TX. Other cast members include Chad Pope, of Commerce TX; Shauna Holloway, of Garland, TX; and Joshua Simmons, of Lone Oak, TX.

Admission is $10.00 for non-student adults, $8.00 for ages 65 and older, and $3.00 for students and children under 18. Group rates are available. For ticket reservations, contact the University Playhouse box office at 903-886-5900, or e-mail atplayhouseboxoffice@tamu-commerce.edu
