Dr. Amir Abbassi joined the faculty in 2001. Dr. Abbassi's clinical background includes work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He worked as a college counselor for 15 years before joining this department. Dr. Abbassi is a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and a Board-Approved Supervisor in the State of Texas. He is currently a certified member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT), a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and a member of the Texas Counseling Association (TCA). He served as president of the Texas College Counseling Association and Texas Association of Marriage and Family counselors. Dr. Abbassi has been in limited but active private practice for over 20 years as a supervisor where he works with those students who want to become specialized in marriage and family therapy.  In this department, Dr. Abbassi primarily teaches theories of individual counseling and marriage and family therapy at both masters and doctoral levels.  His primary research interests include family violence, communication in marriage, anxiety, depression and suicide. Dr. Abbassi is on the editorial board of The Scientific Pages of Mood Disorders. He is peer reviewer for Psychological Report and is a member of the AASECT Professional Education Steering Committee. He also is a program reviewer for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
