MSW Program

Admissions Requirements

The minimum requirements for full admission to the MSW program are:

  • Four-year Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.
  • Background in Liberal Arts including:
    • 9 hrs. Speech/Communication courses.
    • 3 hrs. Math
    • 8 hrs. Natural Sciences
    • 3 hrs. Visual/Performing Arts.
    • 3 hrs. Humanities
    • 6 hrs U.S. History
    • 3 hrs. Miscellaneous (e.g. Philosophy, Psychology, etc.)
    • 2 hrs Physical Education/Health and Wellness.
  • 3.0 GPA overall, or 3.0 GPA for the last 60 hours of undergraduate works.
  • Graduate Records Examination (GRE) if undergraduate GPA is under 3.0.
  • Resume or Curricula Vitae
  • Professional Narrative Statement
  • Three (3) references using the provided reference form.
    • Must be signed by reference in pen (no digital signatures).
    • Only professional (e.g. Manager, Supervisor) and Academic (e.g. Professor, Instructor) references will be reviewed.
    • References must be directly submitted by the person providing the reference; references submitted directly from applicants will be considered invalid. 
  • Passport-style head shot photo.

Admission Process

The following is a summary of the admissions process. Admission will depend on available space. For more detailed information, checklists and reference forms, please consult the Admissions Overview Form.

  1. Apply with ApplyTexas by selecting Master's Application.
  2. Fill out and submit application along with $50.00 application fee.
  3. Mail any official undergraduate transcripts to the TAMUC School of Social Work.
  4. Mail References, Resume or Curricula Vitae, GRE scores (if necessary), Professional Narrative Statement and Photo to the TAMUC School of Social Work.
  5. Once all these components are Received, the application will be reviewed by our admissions committee.
  6. You will receive an admissions decision via email.
  7. If accepted, you will be notified of the time and date of mandatory orientation.
  8. Register for classes.

Advanced Standing

Prospective students who have already obtained a Bachelor's of Social Work (BSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) are qualified for advanced standing. Preferential consideration will be given to BSW applicants with a 3.0 GPA or better.
