Letter from the Director

Welcome to A&M University-Commerce Social Work Program's website.  A&M University-Commerce is an excellent place to pursue your interests in professional social work education. We have offered a fully Bachelor's of Social Work (B.S.W) since 1978 and began offering the Master's of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree in 2001 -both fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Social Work at A&M University-Commerce focuses on diversity and difference through the lens of a strengths perspective.  Students expand their knowledge and experience for working with highly diverse populations through opportunities in and out of the classroom, including study abroad experiences. The School of Social Work began a study abroad program in 2012 with students traveling to Costa Rica and engaging with various social workers and social service professional while learning about the socio-political system.  In the summer of 2016, A&M-Commerce social work students became the first in the A&M University System to engage in an educational program in Cuba.

A&M Commerce Social Work graduates are prepared to work in both rural and urban settings.  Our alumni work in many areas of social work practice including healthcare, child welfare and mental health practice. They take on the challenges of prevention and intervention for mental illness, ending homelessness, stopping family violence, promoting social and economic justice and engaging in an ever-changing social and global environment with diminishing resources.

We pride ourselves on providing a flexible educational opportunity through a blend of settings and venues that includes offering our programs on multiple campuses and combining daytime, nighttime, and online and blended courses.  Reinforcing the value of human relationships, we offer classes primarily in a face-to-face venue where we get to know our students and work with them individually to develop their knowledge and skills for competent social work practice.

If you have a passion for engaging with people and making positive changes happen, I invite you to explore our programs and offerings.
