Emily Newman received her PhD in art history from The Graduate Center, City University of New York, her MA in art history from Pennsylvania State University, and her BA in studio art and art history from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Her research and work centers on female body image in contemporary art, particularly focusing on the ways that artists incorporate eating disorders and obesity into their practice. Additionally, she examines the way that art history intersects popular culture. She has presented at numerous national conferences, and has forthcoming publications and presentations on various topics including Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculptures, Hedda Sterne, the illustrations of early editions of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and the use of dieting by artists in the 1970s and 1980s.
