TESOL Graduate Certificate

In addition to the enhanced professional status that the Certificate in the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) brings, this Certificate will enable the holder to meet the 18-hour SACS requirement to teach at the College level.

This certificate is ideal for students that either already hold a completed graduate degree or are actively in the process of earning a graduate degree and wish to earn this certificate in conjunction with their degree. If you have not completed or are not actively enrolled in a graduate program, our full Master's in Applied Linguistics with emphasis in TESOL would be the better alternative for you than just the certificate. app

We do not have an application deadline. You can apply as a "nondegree" student or a full graduate degree seeking student at www.applytexas.org

Application Requirements for:

Keep two things in mind about "nondegree" status:

  • Nondegree students are not eligible for financial aid
  • International students are eligible for nondegree status for this certificate, but only if they pursue the entire certificate online, as you will not be offered a student visa based on nondegree enrollment.

Things to Consider

Considering a Master’s or Doctoral degree? You can earn this certificate in conjunction with your graduate degree! Each course in your certificate will count towards your course requirements in the Master’s in Applied Linguistics with emphasis in TESOL, Master's in English, and PhD in English. Other University graduate programs outside of those listed above may also count your certificate coursework towards their degree.

Not sure about pursuing a full graduate degree? No problem. You can pursue this certificate as a "nondegree" student without having to pursue a full graduate degree. Keep in mind that if you change your mind later and would like to pursue a graduate degree in conjunction with your certificate coursework, only four courses (12 credit hours) of this certificate program can be transferred into a graduate program. Be sure to APPLY for your graduate program before you complete your fourth course (12th credit hour).

Accreditation

Texas A&M University-Commerce is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), one of the six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

To teach grades K-12 ESL in the USA, an ESL teacher certification is required. This program will NOT provide you with teacher certification for USA schools K-12. Rather, this program prepares you to teach adults both in the USA and in the rest of the world. However, we have many students in the program that currently hold ESL teacher certification and find this program to be a great complement to their work in the K-12 classroom. If you are interested in a Texas teacher ESL certification program for K-12, that may be obtained at our University by contacting our Educator Certification Office.
