Plan Ahead!

Considering a Master’s or Doctoral degree? You can earn a certificate in conjunction with your graduate degree! Each course in your certificate may count towards your course requirements in the Master’s in Applied Linguistics with emphasis in TESOL (TESOL certificate only), Master's in English (all certificates apply), and PhD in English (all certificates apply). Other University graduate programs outside of those listed above may also count your certificate coursework towards their degree.

Not sure about pursuing a full graduate degree? No problem. You can pursue this certificate as a "nondegree" student without having to pursue a full graduate degree. Keep in mind that if you change your mind later and would like to pursue a graduate degree in conjunction with your certificate coursework, only four courses (12 credit hours) of this certificate program can be transferred into a graduate program. Be sure to APPLY for your graduate program before you complete your fourth course (12th credit hour).

STEPS FOR EARNING A CERTIFICATE

  • Ensure you complete the required coursework for the certificate.
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA in each course required for the certificate. This means you cannot earn less than a B in a course that is required for the certificate.
  • After you complete all the requirements for the certificate (if you are also enrolled in a graduate program, this may be done before you actually complete your graduate degree) complete this FORM and submit it to the Graduate School. This will ensure that the name of the certificate is listed on your official transcripts.
