Specialization in ESL (English as a Second Language)

For Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teaching). Required courses in the specialization (18 semester hours):

  • English 457 Teaching English as a Second Language (3sch)
  • English 462 Learning Acquisition and Processing (3sch)
  • Two 200-level foreign language courses (6sch)

One (3sch) course from the list below:

  • English 301 Modern Grammar (3sch)
  • English 331  Introduction to Linguistics (3sch)
  • English 424  Development of the English Language (3sch)

Specialization in Bilingual

For Interdisciplinary Studies Majors (Elementary Teaching). Required courses in the specialization (21 semester hours):

  • English 301 or English 331
  • English 358
  • English 457
  • English 462
  • Spanish 331
  • Spanish 332
  • Spanish 341 or Spanish 354
  • One half of student teaching in a Bilingual classroom

English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

  • English 358

  • Student teaching in ESL or one year's teaching experience in an ESL or Bilingual classroom
  • Pass the ESL ExCET
