In 1922, Dr. Frank G. Brooks and a group of his students at Oklahoma City University aimed to form an honor society for students of the biological sciences. They developed Tri Beta, an organization whose purpose was to stimulate sound scholarship, promote dissemination of scientific truth, and encourage investigation in the life sciences. After the organization’s initiation, rapid growth ensued. By 1925, the society was a national organization hosting biennial national conventions for its multiple chapters. In 1930, the organization started its own journal, BIOS, for updates on society news and for publication of student research. Today, the organization continues to thrive. Regular membership can be attained for students who major in biological sciences, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and have completed a minimum of three courses in biology (associate members are those who have not taken three biology courses but fulfill the other two membership requirements).
The Delta Gamma chapter of Tri Beta was founded in 1961 at East Texas State College (former name of Texas A&M University-Commerce). Since then, it has been an active organization on campus, participating in a variety of society functions and charity work pertaining to biological and health sciences. Notable functions include attendance of the district and national conventions of Tri Beta, trips to the Dallas Museum of Natural History and Sciences, and visits to various Texas hospitals and medical schools. Charity and outreach of the organization includes hosting annual Thanksgiving canned food drives for local food pantries and cosponsoring the Biology Merit Exam, an exam conducted for the recognition of special achievement in biological sciences among secondary school students in the Northeast and North Central Texas area. However, the most important function for the modern-day chapter is the annual Relay for Life event, a 12 hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS). TriBeta is a leader in this event, always raising a large fraction of the money donated to ACS.
