Educator Certification

Alternative Certification
Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification

A student may apply to pursue their Texas Teacher Certification through 2 different options:  Alternative Certification or Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification.

Alternative Certification:  Students may earn their alternative certification without a master's degree.  The first step is to pass your TExES (PACT) content exam.  Once the student passes the content exam, they apply to our Educator Certification through Apply Texas and gains admission to the Graduate School.  Then they must contact the CECAS office for next steps.

Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification (PBTC): Students may earn their initial teaching certificate while seeking a graduate degree. The following graduate degree programs include Curriculum and Instruction, Early Childhood Education, Reading, Secondary Education, or Special Education. If a student wants to pursue PBTC but a different master's program, please contact CECAS office for advising.

A unified system of records for all teacher education students is maintained in the Center for Educator Certification and Academic Services (CECAS).  This office processes all applications and fees for certification and can answer questions concerning certification requirements and procedures.

To apply for PBTC; click the Apply Texas application link on the right and complete a Graduate/domestic application for the master's program and pay the application fee.  You must submit all required documents and gain admission to the master's program before you can be admitted to the certification.  Once admitted to the Graduate School, you will need to contact CECAS for information regarding certification requirements and certification fees.
