The Department of Music offers the Master of Music degree with three areas of emphasis:  Performance, Music Education and Piano Pedagogy.
The Master of Music with an Emphasis in Music Education focuses on teacher training for the private studio and the elementary and secondary school levels.  Graduate students with an Emphasis in Music Education take required courses in the Graduate Music Core (music history, music theory, scholarship, and aesthetics) and their respective area of interest in music education (applied study, elementary and secondary music education methods, and literature).  In addition, they complete a final project in music education.  Prospective graduate students must audition (performance or teaching demonstration) for admission and complete diagnostic examinations-they need not take the Graduate Record Exam. They may obtain specific requirements for the audition by contacting the Graduate Coordinator in the Music Department. Students with a bachelor's degree in music from A&M-Commerce may use a letter of recommendation from their applied teacher(s) in lieu of an audition.
The Master of Music with an Emphasis in Performance develops specific music skills and abilities to a high degree in the fields of instrumental, keyboard, and vocal performance and conducting.  Graduate students with an Emphasis in Performance take required courses in the Graduate Music Core (music history, music theory, scholarship, and aesthetics) and their respective performance area (applied study, pedagogy, and literature). In addition, they perform or conduct two recitals.
