Flexibility in program planning for the MS and the MEd degrees permits the student to prepare for positions in community agencies, schools, or student affairs in higher education. The master's degree program with School Counseling emphasis requires a minimum of 51-semester hours. The master's degree program with Clinical Mental Health emphasis requires a minimum of 60-semester hours. The MEd program with a Student Affairs emphasis is a 36-hour degree program. With proper advisement, course work required for the degree may include courses required in Texas for licensure as a professional counselor (LPC) and/or certification as a professional school counselor, as outlined in later sections.

Admission Consideration Requirements for All Students

  • Application
  • Application fee:  $50 domestic student 
  • All official transcripts - Bachelor's degree, including all transcripts used towards bachelor's degree.  Any master's degree transcript or transcripts with graduate coursework (if applicable).
  • 3 letters of recommendation on Counseling Department recommendation form.  
  • Counseling Essay
  • Official General Test GRE Scores
  • Interview

Additional Admission Consideration Requirements for International Students Only

  • Application fee, $75.00, US dollars (this may be paid online when you apply)
  • Bank Statement from the sponsor, must reflect a balance of at least $26,024.82 USD (must be less than 1 year old)
  • Official sponsor statement
  • Official transcripts (with a copy of the provisional certificate or diploma)

  • English Proficiency:

    • Official TOEFL (IBT at least 79, or CBT at least 213, or PBT at least 550), scores must be less than 2 years old, or
    • IELTS (at least overall 6.00 band), scores must be less than 2 years old, or
    • Completion (all years) of a bachelor's degree or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited university, or

The MEd in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Affairs does not require an interview.

 SPRING semester

  • Admission consideration deadline:  October 1
  • The application and all required admission documents must be submitted by the deadline.
  • Interviews by invitation only to be held last Friday of October

 SUMMER semester

  • Admission consideration deadline:  February 15
  • The application and all required admission documents must be submitted by the deadline.
  • Interviews by invitation only to be held last Friday of February  

FALL semester

  • Admission consideration deadline: June 1
  • The application and all required admission documents must be submitted by the deadline.
  • Interviews by invitation only to be held last Friday of June
