Secondary Education

MEd-Secondary Education   (MED-SED) for certified teachers
MS-Secondary Education    (MS-SED) seeking initial teacher certification as part of the program.

The MEd in Secondary Education is for certified teachers interested in the improvement of education through advanced studies of curriculum and instruction in secondary education.  The MS in Secondary Education follows a similar program but also has the initial teacher certification. The major in Secondary Education prepares graduates to (1) improve student engagement, classroom management and teaching effectiveness and (2) qualify for leadership positions in settings for which the masters is required. A graduate with a major in secondary education should possess knowledge of the research and literature in secondary education, curriculum and instructional design, effective teaching practices, and equity in excellence in teaching for all students. Individualized degree plans may be designed to prepare teachers for classroom instruction, for educational opportunities beyond the classroom, and for other advanced academic studies.

Applicants for the MS in Secondary Education must also apply for the PBTC (Post Baccalaureate Teacher/Alternative Certification program).  It requires students to complete a minimum of two (2) non-alternative certification courses, maintain a 3.0 or above graduate GPA prior to applying for the PBTC program.  Once the graduate courses are completed, please complete and submit the ACP application.  There is an additional $50 application fee required for the ACP application.

  • The courses for this program are available only online (no face-to-face courses).  This program is not available to international students.
