THEA - (Texas Higher Education Assessment)

The Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) is a computer-based exam that assesses the reading, mathematics, and writing skills that entering freshman-level students should have if they are to perform effectively in undergraduate certificate or degree programs in Texas public colleges or universities.  It was developed by Evaluation Systems Pearson®, through a rigorous review and approval process supported by skilled and experienced Texas educators.

Students in an Educator Certification Program at Texas A&M University-Commerce that do not have SAT/ACT scores to exempt them from the THEA (see the Teacher Education Checklist per the Department of Curriculum and Instruction) are required to take ONLY the Reading Section of the THEA exam.

THEA Test Dates and Fees:

All testing appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance of your desired testing date and time. We cannot accommodate same-day testers or walk-ins.

THEA exams are offered by appointment only during regular office hours. The THEA costs $50 payable to Texas A&M University-Commerce through our MarketPlace website. The fee for the THEA is a $50 non-refundable fee, regardless of how many sections of the exam are needed.

What to Expect on the day of the Exam:

  • Report on the date and time for which you are scheduled.

  • A valid photo ID is required (driver's license, passport, or other government issued ID).

  • The test is 4 hours long and has 3 sections.You may bring a basic, four-function nonprogrammable calculator ONLY if you are taking the Math section

    • Students needing to complete ONLY the Reading section usually complete their exams within 1 to 2 hours.
