Spanish Placement Exam - SPE

The Spanish faculty has developed a written placement exam to evaluate Spanish aural/listening proficiency, writing, and reading skills of incoming Spanish students.  This is a local exam available to native and non-native Spanish speakers which is designed to test one’s fluency in the Spanish language.

Students whose degree plan already requires them to take upper division Spanish may not substitute lower division courses for upper division ones.

Students with prior instruction in Spanish may benefit from taking the placement exam by being exempt from prerequisite courses (e.g. SPA 1311, 1312, 2311, and/or 2312)

Spanish Placement Exam Dates and Test Fees:

All testing appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance of your desired testing date and time. We cannot accommodate same-day testers or walk-ins.

Spanish Placement Exams are offered by appointment only during regular office hours. The Spanish Placement Exam requires a $20 non-refundable fee that is payable on our MarketPlace website.

What to Expect on the Day of the Exam:

  • A valid photo ID is required (driver's license, passport, or other government issued photo ID).

  • The test has 3 sections: Listening, Multiple Choice, and Essay.

  • The test lasts approximately 1 hour.

How is Credit Awarded?:

Depending upon their results, students may place into one of the following Spanish Language classes: SPA 1311, 1312, 2311, 2312, or 331.

Credit is awarded once the student successfully completes the Spanish Language class they placed into. Students who successfully complete their placement course with a grade of D or higher (a grade of C or higher is required if class is part of students' major) will receive credit for that course (3 credit hours), as well as the two Spanish Language courses below that level (6 credit hours).
