Verification for 18-19 FAFSA data

The Department of Education announced financial aid offices will be required to request IRS tax transcripts for 1819 financial aid applicants selected for verification. Copies of tax returns cannot be accepted to meet the verification requirement.


Verification of nonfiling status letters for the 2016 tax year will be required for the following financial aid applicants who indicate on the FAFSA they did not file a tax return in 2016, regardless of whether or not 2016 wages was reported.

Independent financial aid applicants and spouse, if applicable.

Dependent financial aid applicant’s parents reporting no wages or any amount of wages.

Dependent financial aid applicants who report wages that meet the IRS income threshold requiring the filing of a 2016 tax return but indicated they did not file in 2016.

* Dependent financial aid applicants who report $0 wages or wages that are under the IRS income threshold requiring the filing of a 2016 tax return do not have to submit the verification of nonfiling status letter.
