What is LWL?

LWL is a unique global opportunity for undergraduate students in their third year and above.  Students develop an understanding of leadership in a global context that will enhance their interactions with diverse individuals abroad, at A&M-Commerce, and in their future endeavors.  Students will be challenged to examine their own perspectives by learning from each other and the culture that they will visit.

Where do students travel with LWL?

Students accepted for the program are involved in making the final decision on where to travel for the upcoming year.  Prior locations have included cities in both Italy and Spain.  During 2017-2018, LWL students will be researching Thailand.  All locations are approved by the university beforehand regarding safety and any other travel considerations.

Am I eligible to apply for LWL?

Qualifications for the program require you to be an undergraduate student in your 3rd year or above, maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA, and remain in good academic and judicial standing.  All undergraduate students, including international and DACA students, are welcome to apply if they meet these qualifications.

What is the cost to participate in LWL?

All students are required to pay for an obtain a valid passport once accepted to LWL.  United States passport fees are usually between $110-140 (without extra fees such as expedited service).  Students are required to pay a total of $600 (divided equally between the two semesters) towards their participation in the trip.  The rest of the funding for the program is provided by the L.E.A.D. department and student-driven fundraising.  All students are expected to help with fundraising initiatives.  In addition to these requirements, we expect all students to have at least $500 available to them during the international travel period to be used for meals, activities during free time, and any incidentals.

What is the time commitment for participating in LWL?

Throughout the year, students are required to attend weekly meetings with the rest of the LWL participants.  Meetings are usually once a week for 2 hours and determined based on participant schedules.  The typical time is Fridays from 12-2 pm.  Outside of class time, students will need to spend time planning fundraisers, arranging donations, researching the location options and learning about the culture, and preparing group presentations for during the meeting times.  At the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, students travel internationally for 10 days after graduation.

How do I apply for LWL?

Applications are available online in April each spring for the following academic year.  Applications consist of answering background information about yourself, providing contact information for two references, and completing short answer questions.  Accepted students must attend a group meeting at the end of April or beginning of May.
