Since most instructors do not know American Sign Language, another approach is needed to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing students. This presentation will discuss some of these techniques. Even if a video has closed or open captioning, a text version of the video can still be a useful tool for students. Having the text version aid's in content retention for all students. After the slide presentation is complete, choose publish on the menu rather than save. Then choose save as a word document. The resulting document shows the slide with the instructors narration appearing below the slide. Due to the inability to hear their own voice, many deaf or hard of hearing individuals have difficulty speaking clearly. To address this issue the instructor can allow more text communication such as emails, or text submissions in class live. More time may be needed for a student to communicate orally. Understanding the difficulties in communication associated with deafness or hard of hearing can aid in presenting course content. As well as demonstrating acquisition of course content by the student.
