This presentation discusses techniques available to aid partially blind and color blind students and accessing online courses. One simple technique is to use larger font. At least size 12. Also use fonts that are sans serif such as Verdana. Contrast between the background and the text is an important consideration for all students. A student may miss some content or misread the content if the contrast is weak. Do not rely exclusively on color to indicate emphasis. Use symbols such as an asterisk before and after the word emphasized by color. This gives the color blind student a visual cue to the importance of the word or phrase. If the content of the picture is important in understanding the content of the text, describe what is in the picture. If the picture is simply for decoration, use a text entry to state the picture is for decoration only. When possible create charts and graphs that allow other ways to show differences besides color. For example, slash marks, dots, x's. If this option is not available, provide a text explanation of the data represented in the chart or the graph. All of your students may benefit from these techniques.
