This presentation will provide tools and techniques to aid in making an online course accessible to the blind student. The screen reader speaks information on the monitor left to right and top to bottom. Numbering or using alphabetized numbers make it easier for the screen reader to recognize. Placing text above or below a picture, image, chart, or graphic allows the screen reader to access the information for the blind student. This slide shows the outline view to the left and the corresponding text on the side. Putting a period after each letter in an abbreviation signals the screen reader that the letters do not form a word and should be pronounced individually. Instructors should be sure that all icons have a text equivalent so the screen reader can inform the students of its presence and use. Tables and charts can confuse the screen reader as well as the student. Give link's names that explain what they are or where they will take the student. These tools and techniques will also aid students with different learning styles as well as students with some learning disabilities.
