Undergraduate Research Grant Competitions

Spring 2017 Competition

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Undergraduate Grant Program offers support for research and creative activities.  This competitive program is sponsored the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs and the Vice Provost for Research and Dean of Graduate Studies.

The grant competition is held once each semester (typically toward the beginning of term).  Two separate competitions are held: (1) The Undergraduate Research Grant Competition and (2) The Undergraduate Research Travel Grant Competition.  Students may apply in the Fall semester for travel in the Spring semester.

(1) Undergraduate Research Grant Competition

The Undergraduate Research Grant Competition is held to assist undergraduate students who may require funding as they pursue research or creative activities. Proposed funds can be used for the purchase of equipment, software licenses, printing, postage, data searches, and data collection.  Students may request a maximum of $500.  These funds can not be used to pay student wages or for travel.  Funds must be used by July 1, 2017 and spent, processed, routed and expended by July 31, 2017.

To apply, students must submit a proposal that includes the methodology to be used, expected outcomes, and funding requirements.  The body of the proposal should be no longer than 5 pages (this limit does not include references, abstracts, or appendices).  All proposals need to include sections on expected outcomes and specific fund utilization.   Expected outcomes include (but are not limited to): a conference presentation, an exhibition of one’s creative work, completion of an undergraduate Honors thesis, and/or a publication.

The proposal must be readable and well-organized, and give sufficient details about what the project intends to accomplish.  It should identify procedures for accomplishing the goal(s), clear statement of rationale for these procedures, realistic and specific, itemized budget information, and clear time lines for completing the project. The proposed project should demonstrate intellectual merit, and contribute to artistic, scholarly, or literary creativity.

Incomplete applications, including those without a faculty advisor signature, will not be considered.

To apply for a Research Grant students must submit:

  1. An electronic copy of the application (including the checklist) and supporting proposal documents (listed on the Application) to orsp@tamuc.edu.
  2. A hard copy original of the Application, page 1 only with Advisor's signature, to the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (2nd floor of Library, Room 225).

All documents, both the electronic application with proposal documents and the original signature page, must be received by 5:00 pm on Monday, February 13, 2017.  If you have any questions, please contact ORSP at orsp@tamuc.edu or 903-886-5964.

(2) Undergraduate Research Travel Grant Competition

The Undergraduate Research Travel Grant Competition provides funding for undergraduate students presenting their research at a conference.  Proposed funds can only be used for travel to an academic conference at which a student is presenting their work.  Verification of the applicant’s role (for example, a formal acceptance letter or email; the relevant page of conference program) must be documented. If the applicant has not received confirmation, an explanation must be provided. All awards, even if approved by the committee, will not be granted or paid until a confirmation document is received.  Funds must be used by July 1, 2017 and spent, processed, routed and expended  by July 31, 2017.

Grants are competitive and are awarded based upon availability of funding.  Grant awards are application specific and can not be transferred from one event/location to another without prior approval of the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs and the Vice Provost for Research.

To apply for a Research Travel Grant, students must submit:

  • Completed and signed application form (2-page form - please submit the completed checklist)
  • Verification of their work’s acceptance at the conference/professional proceedings
  • One page abstract describing the research or the project
  • Documentation of estimates for each travel expenses requested, except meals.  If travel occurred before the Grant Application period, students must provide receipts (copies) for each expense requested, including meals, with the application. (Original receipts must accompany the request for reimbursement).

The Research Travel Grant application form is not complete without the advisor’s signature.

Interested individuals should submit:

  1. An electronic copy of the Application, with supporting documentation, to orsp@tamuc.edu.
  2. A hard copy original of the Application, page 1 only, with Advisor's signature to the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs (2nd floor of Library, Room 225).

All documents, both the electronic application with supporting documentation and the original signature page, must be received by 5:00 pm on Monday, February 13, 2017.  If you have any questions, please contact orsp@tamuc.edu or 903-886-5964.
