Learning about how these countries and their citizens have overcome incredible hardships and catastrophes has inspired me to do the same.

A Conversation with Caden Sullivan

Why did you choose to go on this program?

The opportunity to study abroad was one of the key motivators that pushed me to join the Regents Scholar Program as a freshman. I had never traveled outside the country before, and I knew an opportunity like this would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would enable me to broaden my cultural awareness and learn so much about what life is like outside the United States.

What surprised you the most about your experience?

I think I was most surprised by how much time I had outside of class time that allowed me to explore the cities we were visiting. Between the lectures, museum visits, and various tours that made up class time, I had plenty of time to tackle my own personal bucket list. I was able to visit a few famous art museums such as the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, the Charlottenburg Palace, the East Side Gallery, and locate several authentic German and French restaurants. While I was able to learn so much from the class activities, I was also able to create my own experiences and immerse myself in the unique cultures of both Germany and France.

What was your favorite part of your time overseas?

I think I most enjoyed trying all of the authentic cuisines. I believe food is a fundamental aspect of any culture and trying the traditional dishes is one of the best and most fun ways to become fully immersed in each country's unique traditions and lifestyles. If you ever visit Germany, I highly recommend the spätzle and wiener schnitzel. For France, enjoying a cappuccino and crepe at a busy café is a must.

How do you intend to use this experience in the future?

My class examined the themes of rebuilding, resistance and resilience in these societies. Learning about how these countries and their citizens have overcome incredible hardships and catastrophes has inspired me to do the same, both as a citizen of my own country and in my personal life. I also think that having an increased cultural awareness is beneficial for any career one might pursue. As someone who is striving toward a career in medicine, I will interact with many patients and colleagues who come from diverse backgrounds and walks of life. I expect that my experience studying abroad in foreign countries will help me connect with diverse people and be more understanding of cultural differences.

What is your advice to students who want to study abroad and participate in this program?

Do it! Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will not regret. It is a fantastic opportunity to see the world and grow as a person.
