Christina Moreland is a designer and cartoonist currently based in Los Angeles, California. She was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky but grew up in a small town called Niederwerrn, Germany. Ten years later she and her family moved to Dallas, Texas. She fell in love with art and drawing exceedingly early on; when her dad was home, she watched him paint in the living room or sketch cartoon portraits of their family, and sometimes she also watched her opi (grandfather) doodle in his notebooks with blue and red ink pens exclusively. Christina loved animated films growing up and marveled at these “magical moving illustrations.”

That same love for drawing has led her to where she is now. Christina pursued a college degree because that's “what you're supposed to do– go to college, get the degree, get the job, settle down, buy a house, etc.” Throughout her personal journey and her time at A&M-Commerce, she learned a lot about what brings her the most joy and what kind of work fulfills her the most. Christina was able to do so because she was provided a nurturing environment and mentors who supported her creative endeavors and talents.

Eventually, the goal became to take all her experiences and skills accumulated over the years and one day work for herself or run her own little studio/shop in the city. She didn't know how or when exactly, Christina just knew she had big dreams. Fast forward almost five years and she has already worked with some of her dream clients and collaborated with big agencies like W+K. Nowadays she is pursuing less client work and more personal projects. Christina is refocusing on work that centers on her love for storytelling and animated cartoons. Her current goal is to hopefully create an animated TV series or web series and see where life takes her. To her, the best part about this life and career is that it's ever-evolving, and we can decide what our future looks like at any given moment. The opportunities for creative expression and success are limitless.

A Conversation with Christina Moreland

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

To be honest, I was never an exceptional student and didn't enjoy school very much; college was no exception. However, I very quickly grew in love with the VisCom program and today I still draw from my experiences during my time there. A smaller university meant smaller classrooms/programs and more opportunities for closer connections with peers and real mentorship from professors. While I wasn't a perfect student, I discovered my strengths (and weaknesses) and how to manage, nurture and pursue my creative passions. I'll always be grateful for my time at A&M-Commerce and for the relentless support my professors showed me during a pivotal, overwhelming and exciting time in my adult life.

What professor on campus positively influenced you?

Practically all of the professors I had made a positive impact on me, but Josh Ege, Lee, Casey and Virgil all specifically rooted for me in ways I'll hold onto forever.

What do you like most about your career?

The flexibility of it, the boundlessness of being a creative.
