In my career, we break down silos to get a diverse group into the discussion. From there, we dissect the problem and associated components. Only then do we build the solution.

When it comes to her career, Courtney Clanton cherishes the journey. There wasn’t a single event that led Clanton to where she is in education. She began studying to be an accountant and worked in the field for a brief time before a series of events and people helped unfold her passion for providing students with academic opportunities.

First, it was her favorite high school teacher who always lent an ear and shared why she was passionate for teaching. Next, Clanton’s advisor saw her potential and guided her to a job that utilized her skills. Finally, her supervisors offered her the support, feedback and opportunities to grow toward education. In her current role, Clanton shares her passion for learning and helps identify skills needed for a variety of in-demand jobs. She also develops programs that prepare students for their careers.

How I can I help you

Two of my passions are education and helping others. In my position, I am able to combine both of these passions to assist students. I work to build academic programs that fit the needs of the individual and the workforce. This means that our programs lead graduates to a job role that is hiring and a degree path that is flexible to fit around the their lifestyle and needs, including family and work.

A Conversation with Courtney

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

I would tell them one of my favorite quotes from Henry David Thoreau, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.”

What do you like most about your career?

There are many reasons why I love my career. I would have to say my favorite part is the ability to help others through collaboration. My LinkedIn headline is “Collaborate to Innovate” because that is what I do. In my career, we break down silos to get a diverse group into the discussion. From there, we dissect the problem and associated components. Only then do we build the solution. One example of this is advisory boards. I get to gather working professionals and educators and together, we determine exactly what skills are needed for a new individual to enter a career. From this information, we then build academic programs.

Tell us more about yourself

Outside of work, I love to take my two dogs on trips with my husband. Our husky, Finn, and heeler, Olivia, have been on many road trips visiting state parks and sunny restaurant patios. They love Mexican food because they get plenty of chips! This year, I hope to take them on their first canoeing trip. Here's hoping we don't tip over! I foster cats and dogs at my home. We have homed around 15 animals; mostly dogs and three cats. When I have time, I also enjoy volunteering with animal rescues.
