Armed with big dreams and aspirations for the future, Joyce immigrated from Nigeria to the United States in 2017. Since that time, she has cultivated many friendships, graduated with a master’s degree in business analytics and worked for some of the world’s largest global technology companies like Microsoft and Amazon. Joyce finds time to relax during her busy schedule, which includes co-founding “Black Woman Paving Ways,” an AI-powered platform geared toward closing the gender gap for women of color in technology and business through “matching mentees to their dream mentors.” She finds joy and relaxation through travel, new restaurants and helping others.

A Conversation with Joyce

What do you like most about A&M-Commerce?

As a student, A&M-Commerce felt like home to me! The welcoming and supportive faculty made the university more admirable.

How has A&M-Commerce influenced your life and career?

My technical skills and values were reinforced as a student and have helped me get this far in my career.

Who was an influential professor during your time as a student at A&M-Commerce? Why?

Zaki Malik, who taught Python when I was a student, has been a positive influence in my career. As a student who was not really a coding fan, I saw learning Python as extremely scary. However, his unique way of explaining how to write Python scripts was instrumental in my academic success. Coincidentally, his guidance in learning Python paid off because my first job right out of graduate school required me to use Python!
