A Conversation with Kate Kincade

Why did you choose to participate in the Study Abroad program?

I very much wanted to go on the Study Abroad trip so that I could learn things about other countries in the places where they took place. Resources that I got from the Office of International Programs helped me to achieve this.

What surprised you the most about your experience?

What surprised me the most from this trip was how different some things are in other countries. I have been to Munich, Germany, before, but Berlin and Paris, France, were new to me. For instance, Paris refers to “normal” water as “having gas” and sparkling water as water “with gas.” It makes sense when you think about it, but it is still very strange. Also, the architecture in Germany and France are fantastic. They really are so, so beautiful. It made me think poorly about American architecture because our country is too young to have original architecture like that.

What was your favorite part of your time overseas?

My favorite part about being overseas was actually seeing the things that I have heard about growing up, like the Berlin Wall, the Eiffel Tower, Omaha Beach and the Louvre. It was really great to have the opportunity to see these sights that have such a rich history. Learning about something is one thing, but actually being in the place where major events happened and learning about them is another.

How do you intend to use this experience in the future?

I have been and will continue to be a huge advocate for the Honors College and the Study Abroad trip as a whole. I think that the trip is a great opportunity for those who typically would not be able to travel overseas. From this experience, I will continue to talk about how great it is to study abroad and how much I loved being able to go.

What is your advice on students who want to study abroad?

I would tell them to absolutely do it! I have been looking forward to this trip since I was a graduating high school senior and had just found out that I was accepted into the Honors College. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I would tell any Honors College student that they should take part in this trip in whatever way they can.
