Marissa Abernathy is from a small town in Northeast Texas called Pittsburg and has fond childhood memories of A&M-Commerce, where her mother received a master’s degree. As the graduate assistant for Fraternity and Sorority Life, she fulfilled one of her goals which is working closely with students. Marissa’s goal is to always help every student she encounters and to inspire them to achieve their goals in whatever capacity that entails.

A Conversation with Marissa Abernathy

What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?

I absolutely loved my time at TAMUC! The small-town atmosphere and close-knit community make developing relationships with peers and faculty remarkably easy. The opportunities for growth after graduation really make Commerce an amazing campus to call home.

What do you like most about your career?

I love creating close relationships with students in an advisor-capacity. Helping them to achieve their goals and pushing them to their fullest potential are so rewarding. The pre-developed communities within Fraternity and Sorority Life are so accepting of anyone and everyone and make this career fulfilling.

How do you help students at A&M-Commerce?

My job is to assist all four Greek Councils in planning events, educational outcomes, and executing any goals related to the building and maintaining of their community. Through the Office of Student Engagement, Fraternity and Sorority Life assists students in locating resources to help with their educational endeavors as well as establishing personal connections to help them succeed throughout life.
