A Conversation With Miracle

Why did you choose to participate in the Study Abroad program?

Since I was a little, I knew I wanted to travel and see the world. As a member of the Honors College, I learned that I had the opportunity to travel abroad to fulfill my capstone requirement. I couldn't contain my excitement because my dream was finally coming true! I come from a biracial background, so this travel abroad opportunity helped me gain a better understanding of different cultures and how I can spread that awareness to others.

What surprised you the most?

I visited Germany and France, and I was surprised to learn that ice is not a common necessity for drinks as it is in the United States. At almost every restaurant, I asked for ice and was told that they don't serve ice with their drinks. I am a certified ice lover, so I was honestly shocked, especially with the humid weather. I was also shocked but impressed with how many people bike from place to place rather than drive like people in the U.S. It is definitely an eco-friendly—and healthy—way to travel.

What was a favorite part of your travels?

My favorite part was learning the history of each country and seeing the different architectural styles. I fell in love with Munich, Germany's buildings as they took on a more gothic cathedral style. The word “gothic” is typically stereotyped as dark, gloomy, and even scary; however their gothic style showed ethereal beauty in the darkness. The food was also a bonus. I’m a picky eater, so I was skeptical, but when you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you take it in stride and really try to step out of your comfort zone. I was so glad that I took that leap because the food there was amazing and burst with flavor. It really allowed me to be open-minded about trying new things, even if it's scary.

How do you intend to use this experience in the future?

My end goal is to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist. In a healthcare setting, I will be working with patients from multiple cultural backgrounds. Traveling abroad allowed me to expand my perspective. A culturally sensitive mindset will allow me to better assist my patients and understand their preferences and worries regarding their care plan. Knowledge of a variety of cultures will allow me to more effectively communicate with my patients so that they receive the healthcare that they deserve. I understand that answers are not always black and white. Shades of red, pink, purple and yellow exist, and it takes courage to widen one’s perspective.

What is your advice to students who want to study abroad?

If you want to travel and the opportunity arises, take it! Life is too short to worry about the what ifs. The Study Abroad program is an opportunity to learn new things and gain a better understanding of different cultures. It's a time where you can jump in with both feet and obtain global awareness. Chantal Mitchell once said, “Study abroad is the single most effective way of changing the way we view the world.”
