Virginia Monk joined A&M-Commerce at Navarro College after working in the non-profit world for many years. She believes the university's partnership with Navarro College is an amazing opportunity for local students to earn a four-year degree without leaving the area.
She enjoys witnessing the success stories that unfold, especially from first-generation and non-traditional students who are making education a priority so they can elevate their lives. She considers it her mission to ensure that A&M-Commerce Lions from Corsicana and surrounding areas have the same opportunities to succeed as their counterparts in Commerce and the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
A Conversation with Virginia
What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending A&M-Commerce?
A&M-Commerce is a very accessible and affordable university. We’re here to work with you and help you learn to access all of the resources to navigate the academic and business side of student life successfully. We can meet your needs in ways that often make for a better investment than other institutions, including important factors like time and travel. Whether you’re a 20-year-old traditional transfer student from a nearby community college or someone returning to higher education after some time, I look forward to sitting with you to explore degree options that can help you reach your goals.
What do you like most about your career?
I am able to work with a wide range of people, including potential and current students, university faculty and staff, people in the community and our partners at Navarro College. Visiting with potential students to help them navigate the transfer process and learn what is available to them is always rewarding. I love that we hold a commencement ceremony in Corsicana each spring because celebrating with students and their families is a joy, and having commencement here allows them to include their family and friends in their special day.
How do you help students at A&M-Commerce?
The Navarro Partnership serves students who live far away from any four-year school, making a bachelor's degree a reality in their lives. Our office is their connection to A&M-Commerce, providing face-to-face student services (such as academic advising), giving them a touchpoint and helping them engage with main campus departments when needed. I also coordinate an event each spring to bring main campus services to Corsicana so that these Lions have the opportunity for engagement and to better utilize more of the opportunities covered by their fees.
