Traditionally, the Summer Leadership Summit is designed for some of Texas A&M University-Commerce’s top student leaders who are actively involved on campus and in the community. Any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student at the University with a cumulative GPA no lower than a 2.0 may apply (as long as you will be in attendance the following fall semester).

How Do I Apply?

Every spring, the application for the Summer Leadership Summit becomes available via the Leadership Engagement & Development (L.E.A.D.) website. The application itself contains three to four short essay questions, a demographic section, a place to list your organizational affiliations, and two references. As you develop your application, keep in mind that the planning committee looks for significant effort in every area. Although you do not need to write a novel for each question, a depth of thought is certainly valued. Quality is much more important than quantity.

Who Should I Select as My References?

In general, students should select references who know them well enough to speak honestly to their character. A great reference can be the defining factor for acceptance into the program. Therefore, students should take careful consideration when selecting their references. Some examples of people students may consider as a reference include: teachers, organizational advisors, mentors, and employers.

What is the Cost to Attend?

When a student is accepted into the program, they are asked to pay a $25 non-refundable deposit. This is the only nominal fee for students. There are opportunities to apply for a scholarship through the SLS committee to cover the expense. Many times, various departments and organizations on campus will invest in students attending the Summit by paying for their $25 registration fee.

When is SLS?

The Summer Leadership Summit is traditionally held once a year in mid-August, just prior to the start of the academic year. The official date of the event this year is September 12-14th, 2014.

Where is SLS held?

The Summer Leadership Summit has begun a new partnership with Pine Cove Camp in Tyler, TX. This venue, tucked away in the countryside of Tyler, contains a variety of lodging options and recreational opportunities. The peaceful serenity of the lodging at Pine Cove combined with the transformational curriculum of the program creates a truly remarkable leadership experience.

What Happens after SLS?

Since the Summit is a helpful way for students on campus to connect with one another, the planning committee coordinates a few efforts to cultivate that notion. Specifically, students are invited to a reunion several weeks after the event to reconnect. Also, each student is added to a Facebook group that encourages each participant to stay in touch, share successes/failures, and create a powerful support network.
