Tonier 'Neen' Cain Coming to A&M-Commerce

On September 18 at 7:00 p.m., Tonier “Neen” Cain, speaker for the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care and co-producer of the video memoir, Healing Neen , will be holding a presentation as part of the Recovery Month Celebrations at Texas A&M University-Commerce.  The event will take place in Ferguson Auditorium and is free to the public.

For two decades, Cain roamed the streets of Annapolis, Maryland, living under bridges or in prison. During that time she dealt with constant rapes and beating, a dangerous crack addiction, and as many as 83 arrests. In 2004, while pregnant, Cain was arrested for violating parole and given an opportunity to go to a community trauma, mental health and addictions program.

The program gave Cain the chance to turn her life around and begin confronting her problems. Today, she works for the National Center for Trauma-Informed Care, dedicating her life to being a voice for those still lost and silent. Cain travels the country giving speeches and working one-on-one with women in prisons and hospitals. In 2010, she released her DVD memoir Healing Neen that has been shown at film festivals all over the country and won numerous awards.

“For those struggling with addiction and believe there is no hope, it is important to know that help is always available,” said Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, associate professor of psychology, counseling, and special education. “Tonier is an example of one who overcame an addiction to crack, cocaine, sexual addiction, alcohol, and other drugs. She has a powerful message of hope for individuals living with an addicted child or family member.”
