Dr. Augustine Arize

Dr. Augustine (Chuck) ArizeRegents professor, Department of Business Administration & Management Information System

I came to Texas A&M University, Commerce in September 1987. I have a record of service that encompasses all four areas - local, state, national and international. At a local level, I established a scholarship fund for General Business and MIS. Since 1994, approximately 200 students have received scholarships. In addition, I have established several $5000 endowment funds in recognition of several professors for their outstanding leadership and service to the department and college. At the state level, I have worked with a number of students from other universities, especially UNT and SMU on their thesis and dissertations. I have coauthored papers with several faculty members in this university, College Station, SMU and UNT. Internationally, my work has been cited by over 1000 other authors in their papers and citations of my work have appeared in the reports of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Canadian Center for Foreign Policy Development, and Harvard University. I have done several research on the economies of United States Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe. My published papers have been found to be useful to government leaders, economists and educators all over the world in solving national problems.

My work has appeared in several conference proceedings, and I have published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed journals such as American Statistical Association journal, Journal of Econometrics, American Business Review, Journal of Empirical Finance, Mid-Atlantic Journal of Business, The Financial Review, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting and Review of Financial Economics, Advances in Financial Planning and Forecasting, Journal of Financial Education, New Frontiers in Business and Economics Research, International Society of Statistical Science in Economics and many others. In 2000, I edited a major book in the international trade area entitled, “Balance of Payment Adjustment-Macro Facets of International Finance Revisited” and published by Greenwood Press.

I am an editor for the African Journal of Accounting, Economics, Finance & Banking Research and Global Journal of International Business Research. I am an associate editor in Journal of Business in Developing Countries, International Journal of Finance, American Economist, Journal of African Finance and Economic Development. I serve on the editorial boards of The International Journal of Quality Science, Journal of Post-Keynesian Economics, Applied Economics Journal, The International Economic Journal, Journal of Developing Areas, The International Journal of Finance, Journal of Economic Studies, Journal of Macroeconomics, American Economist Society, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Applied Financial Economics, Southern Economic journal, Review of Financial Economics and Contemporary Economic Policy. Also, I have been known internationally for my business field and focusing on such issues such as money demand, exchange rates, imports, exports and inflation.

Research is something which keeps me alive all the time. In addition to ten hours a day of research, I also teach four classes and keep my time in helping students during the office hours. Having over 70 hours of statistics while doing my doctorate degree, I enjoy teaching statistics a lot. When my students are successful, I really feel good and happy inside and consider that to be one of my biggest achievements.

I have won all the top awards at A&M Commerce given for teaching, research and service - H.M. Lafferty Distinguished Faculty Award for Research in 1998, Paul W. Barrus Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching in 1997, National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence in Teaching Award in 1995 and Faculty Senate Distinguished Professor Award for teaching, service, and research in 1992. In addition, The Texas A&M University System has honored me with Regents Professorship Award in 2000 and Teaching Excellence Award twice in 2010 and 2011. Recently, the faculty senate has named an award in my honor -- “The Augustine “Chuck” Arize Award for Imagination in Teaching 2011”.

My Ph.d is from North Texas State University (econometrics and management science -what they call business statistics in those days), MBA from University of Central Arkansas and BS from University of Central Arkansas. People see me as a down-to-earth and a kind person. Also, being a father of two children and having a lovely wife, I am very blessed with my personal life.
