CHANGES TO THE REVIEW PROCESS: REVISIONS AND DEADLINE TO COMPLETE THESIS- AND DISSERTATION-RELATED REQUIREMENTS

In an effort to increase efficiency, the Graduate School has made the following changes regarding revise and resubmit requests for graduating students completing a thesis or dissertation. The process is now as follows:

If a paper is found to be in need of significant revisions (either in number or impact), the student will be asked to revise the paper and resubmit it to the Graduate School for a second review. If significant issues are present in the revised paper, the student will be removed from the graduation list to allow additional time for the student to make the needed corrections.

Our hope is that the changes to this process will assist the Graduate School in providing timely feedback to students and assist students by allowing for more flexible due dates for revisions.

Additionally, the Graduate School added the following deadline: Graduating thesis and dissertation students must complete all thesis- and dissertation-related requirements by the Friday before commencement to remain eligible for graduation at the end of the semester.  The thesis- and dissertation-related requirements include:

  • Receive thesis or dissertation approval from the Graduate School (students and advisors will be notified via university e-mail)
  • Pay the processing fee ($73 for thesis students, $83 for dissertation students)
  • Make revisions (if needed) and upload the revised document to ProQuest

Students who do not complete the above requirements by the deadline may be removed from the graduation list.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT THESIS COMMITTEE SELECTION FORM

Thesis students must submit the Thesis Committee Selection form to OTDS@tamuc.edu at least 30 days prior to the defense date. The deadline allows the Graduate School time to confirm all committee members have Graduate Faculty Membership or temporary status; if one or more of the committee members lack the proper membership or status, the deadline allows time for the member or members to apply for and receive membership.

SPRING 2018 CHANGES TO PROCESS

The following changes to the thesis and dissertation processes have taken effect

  • Students conducting studies that do not require IRB, IACUC, or IBC approval may begin data collection after completing RCR training (completed through CITI) and after receiving approval from their advisor to do so. Students no longer have to wait for OTDS approval to begin data collection.
  • Students conducting studies that require IRB, IACUC, or IBC approval may begin data collection after receiving approval from the appropriate reviewing body. Students no longer have to wait for OTDS approval to begin data collection.
  • OTDS will no longer send theses and dissertations to an external methodologist for review. The committee and the department are responsible for ensuring research completed by graduate students is of the highest quality.
