An A&M-Commerce Alum is Making Strides at the American Accounting Association and European Accounting Association

In May 2022, Monica Kabutey, a Texas A&M University-Commerce graduate with an M.S. in Finance and current Accounting Ph.D. candidate, was selected as the 2022 American Accounting Association (AAA) representative to the European Accounting Associating (EAA).

At the EAA Colloquium in Bergen, Norway, Kabutey presented her paper on “Investor's Reactions to Critical Audit Matter Disclosures” and had the opportunity to network with top scholars and academics from across Europe and beyond.

During her time in the A&M-Commerce College of Business, Kabutey participated actively in the Finance Society, where she networked and visited with executives from across the DFW area, including a visit to the Federal Reserve in Dallas. She also participated in the stock market simulation game offered by the Finance Society, providing her with her first encounter with stock market trading.
As a student Kabutey also worked as a Graduate Teaching and Research assistant (GAR) in the Department of Accounting and Finance, supporting professors in teaching and grading while collecting data for various research.
“It was during that time that I discovered I was passionate about teaching and because I like what I did so much, I took the decision to pursue a Ph.D. degree,” Kabutey said.
Graduating in 2015, Kabutey still remains in touch with several COB faculty to whom she expressed gratitude for their tremendous support, mentorship, and advice during her time at TAMUC.
“Though obtaining a degree can be difficult and even frightening, always remember that the walls that seem insurmountable are only imaginary, so knock them down using an imaginary wrecking ball,” Kabutey said. “Always work hard and dream big.”
