A&M-Commerce Students Win Big in Calculus Bowl 2014

Students from Texas A&M University-Commerce competed in the final round of the 94th annual meeting of the Texas Section Mathematical Association of America Calculus Bowl on April 3. The A&M-Commerce Department of Mathematics took 10 students, comprising 3 teams, to the competition and placed second, sixth, and eighth in the state.
“Our students performed well under intense pressure in a competition of knowledge and speed,” said team sponsor Lymeda Singleton. “On any given question during the final round, the lead alternated between our team, Lamar University, and Tarleton University. We are very proud of our teams' performance.”
The second place team was comprised of Bradford Garcia, Jeff Hinkle, John Pollock, and Tyler King. The sixth place team members were Sirong Lin, Malik Ellison-Green, and Lupe Barbosa. The eighth place team members were William Gutierrez, Jennie Patterson, and Maria Zaldivar. The teams were coached by Dr. Charles Dorsett, Mrs. Lymeda Singleton, and Mr. Joshua Patterson.
“I am very proud of our students; their dedication, hard work, and performance,” said Dr. Charles Dorsett associate professor of mathematics.
Students traveled to Laredo to compete at Texas A&M International University. The Calculus Bowl is held annually in conjunction with the pure and applied mathematics and mathematics education state conference.
The MAA was started in 1915 and is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics at the undergraduate level. They have over one hundred national committees and 29 regional sections. For more information visit us on the MAA.
