Former Pro Athlete Named Head Football Coach
COMMERCE, Texas — Dr. Dan Jones, Texas A&M University-Commerce president, and athletic director Carlton Cooper named Guy Morriss as the new head football coach at A&M-Commerce on Jan. 7.
“This is a great day for A&M-Commerce, and for our athletic program,” said Jones. “Coach Morriss brings a tradition of excellence both on and off the field that fits in well with this university’s legacy of greatness.”
A native Texan, Morriss attended Sam Houston High School in Arlington, and graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He brings an impressive background to A&M-Commerce including a 15-year playing career in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots. As a player, he participated in Super Bowl XV with the Eagles and the Super Bowl XX with the Patriots.
“When we started this search, we were looking for someone to take our program in a new direction and make our program nationally recognized,” Cooper said. “We have selected the right person by choosing Guy Morriss to lead our football program.”
Morriss’ exemplary coaching career includes serving an offensive line coach with the New England Patriots from 1988 to 1989 under head coach and NFL Hall of Famer Raymond Berry. Morriss also served as head coach at Baylor University from 2003-2007, the University of Kentucky from 2001-2002, the offensive coordinator at Mansfield High School, head coach of the Washington Marauders (Professional Spring Football League), and as the executive associate head coach for football development and offensive line coach at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky.
“I’m fired up about bringing in Guy Morriss,” said Michael D. McKinney, M.D., chancellor of The Texas A&M University System. “He’s a big-time coach with experience at recruiting in Texas and I’m eager to get him on board. What I like most of all is that he’s an offensive lineman. Offensive linemen are smart and have good hearts. I like this guy.”
