Have You ‘Meta’?: How Bhavana Puttaswamy Turned Data Passion into Global Impact

From mastering complex analytics to powering one of the world's largest social networks, Bhavana Chickmagluru Puttaswamy, a May 2023 graduate of the Master of Science in Business Analytics program at East Texas A&M University, is a remarkable example of how the College of Business equips students to make an impact at the highest levels of tech.
Now a data engineer at Meta (Facebook), Puttaswamy credits her time at East Texas A&M for giving her the technical foundation and strategic mindset necessary to thrive in one of the most competitive arenas in data engineering.
“The program's blend of advanced analytics, data management, and operational strategy was perfect for leveling up my skills,” she shared. “It helped me bridge technical expertise with real business impact, preparing me for the scale and complexity of challenges at Meta.”
In her current role, Puttaswamy is focused on optimizing the data infrastructure that powers Facebook Feed relevance systems. She builds and refines pipelines that process billions of daily interactions, ensuring users see the most meaningful content. “It's incredibly rewarding to work on systems that shape how billions of people connect daily,” she said.
Having previously honed her craft at Amazon, Copart and Goldman Sachs, Puttaswamy's journey has been one of continuous growth and exploration. East Texas A&M's dynamic academic environment and strong community played a pivotal role in shaping her trajectory.
“The campus, faculty, and staff created a space where international students like me could thrive professionally and personally,” she recalled. As a Graduate Assistant in the College of Business Dean's Office, she found mentorship and support from Billie Abell and Yazan Kakish, who helped her navigate academic and workplace cultures in a new country.
Dr. Son Bui and Dr. Zaki Malik’s Database Management, Advanced Analytics, and Data Warehousing courses gave Puttaswamy practical, production-ready skills she now applies daily at Meta. Beyond technical mastery, she highlights how the university's emphasis on leadership, collaboration, and real-world application prepared her for Meta’s fast-paced, cross-functional environment.
Reflecting on her journey, Puttaswamy offers thoughtful advice to current students, especially those aspiring to careers in technology and women in STEM fields
“Own your expertise and build hands-on projects to solidify your skills,” she advises. “Seek out mentors and communities that support you. The industry needs diverse voices, so embrace your unique perspective.”
She also emphasizes the value of mastering fundamentals like SQL, Python, and data structures as building blocks for long-term success.
Above all, Puttaswamy encourages students to embrace the non-linear nature of career growth.
“Focus on learning over titles, say ‘yes' to projects that stretch you, and keep a record of your wins to combat imposter syndrome,” she said. “Most importantly, pay forward the mentorship you receive—it's how we make tech more inclusive, one connection at a time.”
As Puttaswamy embarks on her next chapter at Meta, she remains deeply grateful to her family, mentors, and the East Texas A&M community that helped shape her journey.
“This isn't just a new role—it's the culmination of perseverance, learning, and an unyielding passion for growth. The journey has only just begun.”
