Additionally, I find great joy in supporting our student-athletes at their events. Seeing their excitement and knowing I played a part in their journey adds a sense of fulfillment to my work that is hard to match.

A Conversation With Antonia
How do you help students in your current role?
As an Academic Coordinator for college athletes, my primary role is to support student-athletes in achieving their academic and personal goals while balancing the demands of their athletic commitments. I help students by providing individualized academic advising, assisting with time management, and ensuring they have the resources and support they need to succeed both in the classroom and on the field or track.
What inspired you to pursue a career in academic advising, and what keeps you passionate about your work?
My inspiration stems from my background as a former collegiate athlete. I knew I wanted to stay around athletics but wanted the opportunity to impact the student-athletes outside of their sport. The passion I have stayed alive because I truly love what I do. When a student graduates or even gets through a tough semester and takes time to thank me personally it reminds me of how important this role is.
What do you enjoy most about your role as an academic advisor at East Texas A&M and why?
I enjoy building strong relationships with my students the most. I make sure my office is an open and welcoming space, where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and discussing their academic and personal challenges. Additionally, I find great joy in supporting our student-athletes at their events. Seeing their excitement and knowing I played a part in their journey adds a sense of fulfillment to my work that is hard to match.
How do you help students choose their majors of career paths?
I encourage students to choose majors and/or career paths that they will be truly passionate about. It is hard to enjoy classes and eventually a career that doesn't interest you or give you purpose.
