A Conversation with Kristi

How do you help students in your current role?

As an academic advisor, I help students with their academic plans and get them enrolled in the correct coursework to help them graduate on time. I talk with them regarding future career paths and help troubleshoot issues they may be having with classes. I act as a gateway to campus activities and resources for students to get any help they need, including how to become involved on campus.

What do you think makes East Texas A&M a standout choice for students?

The university’s small town feel allows students to become more involved with their fellow students, professors and staff. Even though the campus may be smaller, the academics offered are still top tier and align with students’ career goals.

How does East Texas A&M help students feel involved and connected to the university community?

The accommodations and availability of activities the university offers to students are amazing. There is always something happening on campus during the week, during the day, evening, and weekend that offers the opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to get together and learn from each other and create relationships that offer opportunities beyond the university.

What is your most important role as an academic advisor?

My role as an academic advisor is an important one as I'm expected to be at the top of my knowledge game when it comes to degree programs within the university. I'm one of the first people new students will meet once they're accepted into the university. I try to answer all their questions about their degree plan and what their major can offer them regarding future education plans or career choices.

Do you attend campus sporting events or activities?

Yes, I try to attend almost all of the home sporting events. I have also attended multiple away games, depending on the location and day/time of the week. I'm hoping to be able to attend the away football game at Florida State University next season. Go LIONS!!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I always find time to enjoy a good book. I don't have a favorite genre, but I'm open to reading almost anything; give me a suggestion! I also enjoy being outdoors, particularly horseback riding and competing in events, my favorite being cutting. The rest of my free time is spent hanging out with my niece and doing all the fun things with her I can do.
