East Texas A&M is a great school with exceptional programs and professors. It was that way back in the late 60s and early 70s when I attended, and it is that way now.
M.J. “Mick” Trusty Attorney
- Alum

M.J. “Mick” Trusty loves history. In fact, he planned to become a high school history teacher, but he veered toward a business degree at the last minute. That choice led him to a law career that turned out to be the perfect fit. Trusty enjoyed a 45-year career as an examiner with the U.S. Treasury and as a trust and wealth management executive with corporate financial institutions. He was surprised to find that historical research actually plays a big role in his career as he unravels the fascinating–and often complicated–history that is entwined with family trusts. Although he has retired from his work with financial institutions, Trusty continues to practice trust and estate planning law with a boutique law firm in the DFW Metroplex. And when time allows, he enjoys visiting historical sites across the U.S.
A Conversation with Mr. Trusty
What do you like most about your current job?
“I enjoy working with clients to improve their financial and business successes and strategies, provide asset protection, and structure charitable gifting to provide tax and financial benefits. I like the creative process involved with consulting and educating clients, and structuring helpful tools for my clients to use. I am also a history buff, so I enjoy unraveling the fascinating history that is interlaced with family trusts.”
Which professor had the most impact on you?
“Dr. Keith McFarland, my history professor during my first year at ETSU, was influential in my life. Through candid discussions, he helped me narrow down my career choices and select a major in business. I became a trust management and legal specialist and achieved a 45-year career in business.”
What would you tell a student who is thinking about attending East Texas A&M?
“First, I will note that I am a first-generation university student and graduate. East Texas A&M is a great school with exceptional programs and professors. It was that way back in the late 60s and early 70s when I attended, and it is that way now. For students like I was, who have no money and have to work and go to school at the same time, East Texas A&M is very supportive. Just ask for help or advice and you will receive it!”
