Degree Programs

The Department of Art offers a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum in the visual arts leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts. Subsequent acceptance into the graduate program allows students to pursue the degrees of Master of Science, Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts. Majors receive broad-based instruction in the foundation areas and proceed through increasingly specialized programs of study that emphasize personal concepts and technical refinement.

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Arts degrees are offered in Art, Photography, and Teacher Certification. Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees are offered in Studio Arts with emphasis areas in Ceramics, Experimental Studies, Painting, and Sculpture. The BFA is also offered in Art Direction, Design Communications, New Media and Communication Arts with emphasis areas in either Copywriting or Illustration. The BFA in Communication Arts prepares students for careers in the advertising industry. Advanced courses in these areas are offered at the Universities Center at Dallas, where new facilities, field trips and internships keep students abreast of the latest trends and technologies in the rapidly-growing field of Communication Arts. The Bachelor's degree in Photography emphasizes applied photography and placement of graduates in professional positions.

Graduate

The Department of Art offers graduate courses leading to the MA and MFA degrees. Students may pursue these degrees in the areas of ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, small metals, and mixed media. Students wishing to pursue graduate work in Visual Communications, commercial photography or non-traditional media may do so by working out a program of study in consultation with the department head, Graduate Coordinator and appropriate members of the art faculty. In conjunction with other departments it is possible, too, to devise a program of interdisciplinary courses that includes art history and art criticism. Students in the graduate program work closely with members of the faculty, and each student's course of study is individually designed for his or her educational and professional objectives. While any student admitted to the Graduate School may enroll in graduate art history courses, those wishing to enroll in studio or lab courses must apply to and be admitted by the Department of Art as well as by the Graduate School.
