Finance Student Secures Internship with Toyota

Mariah Dempsey, a Finance major at East Texas A&M University set to graduate in May 2026, recently secured a coveted internship with Toyota—an opportunity that will allow her to deepen her understanding of the auto and mobility industry while working with one of the world's most respected companies.

Dempsey's interest in finance stems from a desire to equip herself with knowledge that is both personally and professionally empowering.

“Learning about finance prepares me for success in all aspects of life,” she shared. “For instance, understanding investment principles gave me the confidence to buy stocks without feeling like I was gambling.”

Beyond her love of numbers, Dempsey is drawn to the collaborative and ever-evolving challenges that roles like quality control offer—experiences that fuel both professional and personal growth.

Her journey to securing the Toyota internship was marked by persistence and authenticity.

“Throughout the process, I kept my end goal in mind but stayed genuine in my interactions,” Dempsey explained. “I faced a few rejections before finding a position that fit me perfectly.”

She recounted a memorable interview moment when she candidly admitted she didn't know much about cars, even joking, “I could barely drive.” Rather than seeing it as a setback, Toyota appreciated her honesty and character—qualities that ultimately helped her land the role.

While she eagerly awaits orientation to learn more about her responsibilities, Mariah is excited to immerse herself in the global operations of Toyota and gain a comprehensive view of the automotive industry. She credits ETAMU's College of Business (COB) for preparing her well for this opportunity. “The College of Business consistently pushes me out of my comfort zone,” she said. Programs like Speechcraft through Toastmasters and participation in campus activities have strengthened her communication skills and confidence.

Throughout her academic journey, Dempsey has been supported and inspired by faculty and mentors who made a lasting impact. Serving on the COB Student Advisory Board taught her how to view problems as opportunities and appreciate the value of collaboration. Professors like Dr. Guclu Atinc and Dr. Asli Ogunc encouraged her to believe in herself, even when self-doubt crept in.

“I realized I was my own worst critic,” she reflected. “Instead of dwelling on shortcomings, I embraced new experiences and gained a broader perspective as a result.”

Dempsey is passionate about helping fellow Lions pursue similar opportunities. Her advice to students searching for internships is straightforward: be yourself and build genuine connections.

“Attend the events coordinated by the College of Business and the Career Preparedness Center,” she encouraged. “Take advantage of every free opportunity to enhance your professionalism—and don't pass up a free meal, either.”

Her final message to her fellow Lions is one of reassurance and encouragement: “No one expects you to be perfect, especially in college. There's so much to navigate, and it can feel overwhelming. Just know that people and resources are here to support you. All you have to do is seek them.”

As Dempsey embarks on her journey with Toyota, she stands as a shining example of how determination, authenticity, and community support can propel ETAMU students toward bright futures.
