A Conversation with Jane Whittington

What is your current employment/career?

I am an assistant professor at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, PA.

What do you enjoy about your current position as an assistant professor?

I love interacting with my students! Our campus features a small, tight-knit community where I actually get to know my students and watch them grow as academics and members of the community at large. Also, I have had many opportunities to develop new classes and update old ones in cognitive psychology to feature the most up-to-date information with plenty of applied connections to the real world. I hope my students leave the classroom feeling as though they can use the knowledge they've gathered in the classroom to inform their interactions in the real world.

How did A&M-Commerce prepare you for your current position?

One of the most impactful psychology classes I took at A&M-Commerce was an advanced cognition course that focused on topics in the field of evolutionary psychology. It was fascinating to see how many of our current patterns of thought as a species have developed as an adaptation to aid in our survival. Oftentimes, it is difficult to make connections between our evolutionary ancestors and today. Still, this course helped me see how even our memory abilities have been fine-tuned over time to help our species thrive.

What advice do you have for students?

Whether you're looking at undergraduate or graduate academic pathways, A&M-Commerce allows you to explore what you're interested in and which fields hold true promise for your future. Not only that, your professors want you to succeed. They will do their best to help you find your niche and the best way to reach your goals. Academic studies are not always easy, but at A&M-Commerce, you'll never feel like you're working through them alone.
