A Conversation with Laura Benjamin

What is your current employment/career?

“I am currently transitioning from a Reading Interventionist to a Diagnostician position within Denton ISD. I really enjoy being able to work with the students who possess the most need in their educational journey. The students I work with are not confident in their learning because of their academic struggles, so I enjoy encouraging them daily to celebrate their progress, success, and new learning.”

How did TAMUC prepare you for your current position?

“I truly would not feel confident about my new role as a diagnostician without the assessment and evaluation courses that are the cornerstones of the diagnostician profession. In addition, the course, Special Education Law, provided insight into the legal framework for Special Education and why it is imperative in the rights of those receiving services as well as the responsibilities of those providing the services.”

What advice do you have for students?

“The knowledge and expertise of the faculty prepares you to be in the special education professional environment. A&M–Commerce prepares you to be confident in the information that you have learned, and most importantly, the ability to apply that information in real world situations.”
