I believe my proudest accomplishment at Texas A&M University-Commerce was directing Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing as a part of the University Playhouse season. I was able to tell a story that reflected the complexity of human relationships while applying my research.

Samantha Cox is a theatre major but her passion extends well beyond the stage. Small class sizes and one-on-one faculty mentorship allowed her to explore the discipline and discover what she loves.

A Conversation with Samantha

What research projects have you worked on? What was your role?

“I am currently in the process of finishing my honors thesis. I researched the relationship between subtext and text and how that influences physical storytelling. I explored this research question by applying physical storytelling theories to the University Playhouse production of Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing. My role in the production was Director.”

What professor or person on campus has positively influenced you? How so?

“Rebbecca Worley has been so supportive of my goals and my research from the beginning. She has helped me make connections with other professionals in the field and is always willing to answer any questions I may have about my craft. She has also provided me with multiple professional opportunities inside and outside of the department. Her course work is challenging and exciting and I have learned so much from her over these past four years.”

What are your career goals and how does your degree program fit into your career goals?

“I plan to create a non-profit organization that uses theatre as a tool to promote social and emotional learning with at-risk students. I want to use the devised theatre techniques that I have learned to give students the opportunity to have a voice in their communities.”
