A Conversation with Valeria
Why is it important for students to get involved on campus?
I feel like involvement is everything for your campus life! Get out there and show up to any and every event! Join a club or organization to meet new people and step out of your comfort zone. Even working on campus brings you so many more connections than you would think.
What kind of education or training prepared you for this role?
I recently graduated with my Bachelor of Science in the fall where I incorporated a variety of courses in marketing to better help me understand the position I am in and the best practices to use in our area. I started out working as a marketing assistant at the Morris Recreation Center during my freshman year and that is really where I gained the most experience and skills that I still use to this day. Later after moving to the RSC, I gained leadership experience as an area lead which further prepared me for my current position.
What’s the best way to balance work/school and downtime?
I am all about making lists and keeping those lists separate. I will make two different lists of things I need to get done for work and a list of assignments due at the end of the week. It's really helpful for me to see things written out all in one place. Keeping the two separate is key to maintaining healthy boundaries with yourself. It can be so easy to stretch yourself thin!
